The Place

The westernmost point
of Africa with a swell
365 days a year.

Dakar, Senegal, is a peninsula at the very tip of West Africa, a city wrapped in surf spots on every side. When one coast goes flat, the other pops off. Nobody here has ever waited for a season.

In 1966, Bruce Brown carried The Endless Summer to the reef off Ngor, and the wave has worn the film's name ever since. What that footage never showed was the scene growing up around it. Sixty years later, it runs four generations deep.

The Scene

Dakar's surfers aren't discovering surfing. They've been at it for four generations, and the scene has grown a style of its own, pulled from the color, rhythm, and hustle of Senegalese life. It doesn't look like California. It doesn't look like Australia. It looks like Dakar.

What happens when the rest of the surf world finally sees it?

3 surfers. 3 dreams. 1 peninsula.

The film follows three locals chasing what's next. Unlimited waves, limited resources, and no intention of waiting for permission. We hear them the way their friends do: through their own voice notes, narrating their world in real time.

Not that African surf movie

This isn't a story
about what they lack.

You've seen the other version. Poor kids. Makeshift boards. A foreign filmmaker's pity, set to strings.

Dakar Dream is the counter-shot. Surfers who grew up in the swell, with a command of the ocean that only comes from four generations in it.

Dakar Dream is a POVdoc. The surfers shot their own story, chose what they wanted shown, and framed it the way they wanted it seen. What comes back is raw, intimate, and impossible to fake. The audience isn't watching this community. They're inside it.

POVdoc /pauv-doc/ noun
A documentary in which the subject holds the camera and decides what the audience sees, while the filmmaker works behind the scenes instead of behind the lens.

It started as vertical clips, thousands of them, until a hard drive held 13,000 unorganized files and no narrative. Over three years every clip was catalogued by location, by trick, by surfer, until the story that was always there came into focus.

Surf with
the surfers

The film ends. The waves don't.

The people you just watched are all surf instructors. Four schools on the peninsula, run by and with the surfers of Dakar Dream. If the film put the idea in your head, this is where you follow it.
